What is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver. Unlike hepatitis B and C it does not become a lifelong infection – your body clears it – but while it is active it can make you feel very ill for weeks, and in rare cases it causes serious liver damage. It spreads when tiny amounts of stool from an infected person reach your mouth: through contaminated food or water, close household contact, and sexual contact, particularly oral–anal contact.
Outbreaks among adults happen in the US every year, and sexual transmission is a recognized route, which is why hepatitis A belongs in a complete STD workup.
Symptoms
Symptoms usually start two to seven weeks after exposure and can include tiredness, low appetite, nausea, stomach pain (especially on the right side under the ribs), dark urine, pale stools, joint pain, and a yellow tint to the skin or eyes. Some people – especially children – have no symptoms at all and never know they had it, yet they can still pass it on.
